​Small group learning in the computer-supported collaborative learning environments supported by knowledge buildingmethodologies promotes critical thinking, innovation, 

communication and creativity. Learning is acquired through dialogue around ideas and followup research and investigation rather than focusing on memorization techniques

and removing any context from the acquisition of knowledge. Knowledge building is especially beneficial for students who do not write at grade level for college readiness or

who are English language learners. The methods used in knowledge-building classrooms address these deficiencies and others in current education processes that call for

early remedy, as knowledge-building students are constantly reading and writing.


The model also renders obsolete the practice of announcing test results after the course has finished. With the availability of real-time evaluation of learning outcomes,

teachers can course correct if needed before testing takes place. It constitutes a coherent and aligned assessment so that students can focus on those areas where

additional effort is needed to master the subject matter or take courses that will remedy mastery deficiencies. In this way, students are closer to being college ready, a

process that really should begin in middle school. We believe that making grades available to 11th graders in the spring after class is over so they can prepare to take

make-up courses as high school seniors is too late to prepare them for college readiness.

We have seen the success of these strategies in classrooms around the world;  the model is now available in 20 countries - one that is scalable, economical and readily
implemented, to nurture students in their academic pursuits and prepare them for success as students and as global ​citizens. Learn more about our approach - project-

approach to learning so that critical thinking rather than memorization is applied to learning. The formative assessment tools in real-time of the  ALTE Global Learning

Ecosystem provide for the creation and/or modification of approaches that adapt coursework to individual class needs and environments - no waiting until classes have

ended to get ​learning outcome results!


Assessment has always been at the heart of the student experience and defines what is regarded as important in the educational ​process. But continuing to assess student learning – and to graduate students by certifying deficient student learning – in the same manner as we did 20, 40 or 100 years ago does not do justice to a meaningful

reference to what students should demonstrably know and be able to do. Nor are we doing students justice in assessing their readiness for college or the ​workforce. With

the ALTE knowledge-building model, we prepare today's students for tomorrow's challenges.
